Swiss Barakah Charity: Success through micro-giving

From a total donation volume of CHF* 6.3 million in 2023 to CHF 16.6 million in 2025: Swiss Barakah Charity has more than doubled its annual donation volume in just two years. How?

A donation of five francs may seem small. But when lots of people get involved – and some even donate every day – it creates a movement. Swiss Barakah Charity shows how the right moment, a simple mobile donation method and an active community all work together.

Small mobile donations – BIG impact

What can fundraisers achieve when donations start at just small amounts and can be made directly via a smartphone? In Swiss Barakah Charity’s 2026 Daily Ramadan campaign, the median donation was CHF 5.09, and 4,525 transactions raised a total of CHF 64,784. This was made possible by a donation appeal at just the right time, the option to give daily, and a community that supports the campaign.

The trend in donations also shows just how much Swiss Barakah Charity has grown since its foundation. What lies behind this growth? Swiss Barakah Charity combines four elements:

Making a bigger difference together

Swiss Barakah Charity was founded in Switzerland in 2019. Today, the organisation supports projects in more than 60 countries and is active not only in Switzerland but also in Germany, Belgium, the USA, the UK and Canada. Its work covers various areas, including education, water supply and humanitarian aid. *All donation amounts are stated in Swiss francs (CHF). For reference: 1 CHF is equivalent to approximately 1.07 euros (as at 13 October 2026, ECB reference rate).

Our approach is: community rather than a database. We believe that successful fundraising begins with exciting, innovative and impactful projects that inspire people and make a real difference. We don’t just want to encourage people to donate; we want to win them over to our projects, forge an emotional connection with them and invite them to get involved themselves. Because when people are convinced by an idea and identify with a mission, they don’t just donate – they also inspire others to become part of it.

Swiss Barakah Charity has always been committed to not just asking people for support, but to involving them. One example of this is a campaign from July 2026: a supporter ran 775 kilometres from Zurich to Hamburg, raising more than CHF 10,000 in the process. His personal challenge became an opportunity for many others to get involved in Swiss Barakah Charity’s mission.

Momentum: Seizing the right moment to make a donation

People’s willingness to donate changes over the course of a year. The RaiseNow Fundraising Study 2026 shows that different organisations receive particularly high levels of donations at different times of the year. For many charities, the end of the year is a key period. For organisations with a religious focus, however, religious festivals such as Ramadan or Christmas can trigger a significant surge in donations.

Swiss Barakah Charity tailors its fundraising to these moments. Looking back at 2025, March – the month in which Ramadan fell – stands out clearly: the monthly donation total in 2025 was just under CHF 5 million, well above most other months of the year.

Making the most of Ramadan in Barakah

Swiss Barakah Charity offers various ways to get involved during Ramadan. As well as one-off donations, this includes the option to donate daily. This allows supporters to choose an amount that suits them and to give it regularly throughout Ramadan – entirely automatically via a digital donation form.

The 2026 campaign ‘Transform Ramadan into Barakah’ illustrates how this works in practice. Between 17 February and 19 March, 4,525 transactions were received from 1,486 donors. Together, these totalled CHF 64,784.26. The median amount was CHF 5.09; in addition, 192 standing orders were set up. Discover Daily Ramadan here!

These figures demonstrate the campaign’s effectiveness: many people contribute small amounts, often choosing to provide regular support. Ramadan and other celebrations provide a shared occasion for campaigns. The appropriate donation options make it easy to act on this occasion.

Micro & Mobile: Making small donations easy

The urge to donate often arises whilst out and about or when viewing a post on social media. If someone then has to open a complicated webpage, enter lots of details or search for a suitable payment method, what was a fleeting moment can quickly turn into a lengthy process.

Swiss Barakah Charity therefore designs its donation channels specifically with the smartphone in mind. On the mobile donation pages, supporters can select a cause and an amount and then make the payment. The frequency of donations can also be tailored to the campaign – for example, with a daily donation during a campaign.

The organisation’s figures demonstrate just how well this approach suits its target audience: 90.1 per cent of transactions take place online. Of the digital donations, 85.7 per cent are made via mobile devices.

Donations by age group

Added to this is a comparatively young group of donors. 38 per cent are aged between 25 and 34, a further 23 per cent between 35 and 44, and 19 per cent between 18 and 24.

However, these figures do not mean that every donation follows the same pattern. The RaiseNow Fundraising Study 2026 shows, for example, that smaller amounts are particularly often donated via mobile devices. When it comes to larger amounts, people often take more time and are more likely to use a larger device. It is therefore worthwhile for organisations to make the spontaneous mobile donation process particularly straightforward, whilst at the same time providing sufficient information for people who wish to do some research before making a larger donation.

Movement: Turning donors into a community

A simple donation process helps people get involved. The long-term strength of Swiss Barakah Charity lies in the fact that its supporters also bring others on board.

The organisation engages directly with its community, particularly via social media. It focuses on Community Fundraising and creates opportunities for people who want to get involved themselves: by sharing a project, launching their own campaign or collecting donations amongst their friends and family.

The projects make it clear what people are raising money for and give them a reason to draw others’ attention to them.

From a single act of giving to a movement

Swiss Barakah Charity’s Ramadan campaign shows how many small donations can add up to make a big difference. Other organisations can take four key lessons from this:

  • Seize the right moment: organise campaigns around events that are important to the community.
  • Welcome small donations: Even a few francs enable people to get involved.
  • Think mobile and regular: Keep the donation process simple and make it possible to give every day.
  • Involve the community: Encourage supporters to share projects and launch their own initiatives.

Swiss Barakah Charity describes its vision as ‘community rather than a database’. When people feel connected to a project, they can contribute far more than a single donation – and inspire others to get involved.
